Infrastructure outage

Jon Seager alerts us of an infrastructure outage in a Canonical/Ubuntu data center. Whilst most Ubuntu users shouldn’t be impacted by this outage, it can impact developers or users of some services. We’re told they’re working on restoring the impacted services. The original post has received replies from John Chittum with updates telling us services are gradually coming back online. John gives us some details and will update this post as the status changes.

AMDGPU performance regression in Kernel 7.0.0-28.28

Kleber Souza tells us the Ubuntu Kernel team “acknowledge[s] a performance regression identified within the amdgpu driver for the upcoming 7.0.0-28.28 kernel”. Thanks are given to the “community testers and early adopters for identifying and reporting this behavior” . We’re told what to expect, including who is affected, and that the fix is queued to be included in the next upgrade. Reasoning for the delay, links, and more are included.

Got your keys ready for DebConf26?

Gunnar Wolf posts that DebCamp is underway [13 - 25 July], and it’ll soon be time for DebConf. Gunnar tells us he’s got the task to coordinate a DebConf26 keysigning party, and provides the link to the DebConf26 keysigning map. If we’re going to DebConf26, we’re asked to confirm we’re on the list and if we’re not, we’re told how to sign it; though the deadline for adds/edits has now passed.

What Say You

Why I Use Ubuntu: A Journey That Started in 2007

“… For me, Ubuntu is not just an operating system. It is the Linux distribution that opened the door to the open-source world. A free CD arriving in Turkey in 2007 may seem like a small thing today, but at that time it showed me the power of the Ubuntu community. That experience created a connection that has lasted for years.” - Can

Meet the Members: Joshua Peisach

“… When I was young, about like, eight years old, I went to my father’s workplace, and I saw what a virtual machine was. This, along with my access to the family laptop, had me teach myself how to type, surf the internet, create my own virtual machines (which is what lead to my first interaction with Ubuntu, I believe a VM in ~2014), and find my love for computers. … In 2018, I got a new laptop for myself, did some distro hopping and landed back at Ubuntu because it was what I was familiar with. It was my ‘home’. From there, I started to understand the differences between desktop environments. …” - Joshua Peisach
